FAQ
Q: Do you offer day rentals and / or at once rentals at the shop?
A: We do when equipment is available, but if you are interested in a weekly rental, we strongly advise you book online in advance. Equipment is limited and during June, July, & August we often run out. Please visit our daily rentals page for daily rates.
Q: Do you offer surf or paddle board lessons?
A: We do not through the shop but we do have instructors that we can put you in touch with for surf lessons, paddle board lessons, and paddle board tours. Please give us a call or email for more information.
Q: We would like to try kayaking and / or paddle boarding but we're not familiar with the area. What are the dangers and what precautions should we take?
A: In short, tides and oyster beds are the two greatest hazards. The higher the tide, the larger your paddle area and the deeper the water. The lower the tide the greater the risk of getting stuck in the creeks and possibly cut on oyster beds. Our canals, creeks, and water ways are full of oyster beds that you CAN NOT walk on. If we have a paddler injured in the backwaters, 90% of the time it's from exiting the kayak or board (on purpose / or not) into an area where oysters are on the bottom. It's a good idea to consult with us before heading out in unfamiliar waters to formulate a game plan. Know the tides, the currents, and map out where you are headed. Please read our OIB PADDLE INFO page for info on where paddlers can access and paddle the backwaters.
Q: We are not staying in a house or area with back water access, where can gain access to the calmer backwaters?
A: On Ocean Isle we only have 2 public accesses to the backwater. They are located under the Ocean Isle bridge at the NC state wildlife boat ramp and at the Old Ferry Landing at the end of Shallotte Blvd. on the far east end of the island. For more information on paddling these areas please visit our OIB PADDLE INFO page.
Q: We would like to rent paddle gear to launch at the NC State Wildlife boat ramp under the OIB bridge. Do you deliver to the boat ramp?
A: We only offer delivery to your house. If you want to head out for a couple hours in the backwater and do not have access at your house you can either: Hire a guide for a kayak or paddle board tour (we recommend this if you really want to get in the creeks and explore but are not familiar with the area, the tides, and the currents), or you can transport the kayak or paddle board yourself to the boat ramp. (If you have a SUV or truck this is very easy. We can also tie or strap equipment to your luggage racks if you have the 2 bars that run horizontally across your vehicle).
Q: Do you have bicycles with gears?
A: We do not and to the best of my knowledge none of the local rental companies do. The sand and salt air is really tough on bike parts and the more simple the bike is, the fewer the problems. Our island is very flat and we do not allow our bikes on the dunes or beaches where you may need gears.
Q: Can I get my rental equipment delivered if I'm not able to transport to and from my house?
A: All online rentals are delivered. If booked in advance online, delivery and pickup is included in the price. Currently we are offering delivery on Saturdays for weekly rentals performed at the shop but we do charge $20 for delivery on shop orders and these deliveries are performed after all online orders are delivered. We are not currently offering deliveries on short term orders or weekly orders that are not Saturday to Saturday.
Q: Can I book equipment for a Sunday to Sunday or a Friday to Friday weekly rental?
A: This may be possible at the shop in our slow season but not during the busy months of June, July, & August. When we book an item from Sunday to Sunday or Friday to Friday it knocks that item out of our Saturday to Saturday calendar for 2 weeks so we try to stay away from anything other than Saturday to Saturday rentals in the high season.
Q: How can I secure my bike so that someone does not borrow it without my permission?
A: We provide bike locks with all of our bikes. Our combination cable locks are 6' long and we typically provide 1 lock for every 2 bikes. If you need a lock for each bike rented we can usually provide extras. We do not provide locks for paddle boards or kayaks because they tend to go in the water and will not work thereafter. Please bring cable locks if you feel like you need to lock water equipment up at your condo or house.
Q: Do paddle boards and kayaks come with life jackets? Can we rent extra vests or get smaller kid's life jackets?
A: Our paddle boards and kayaks do come with an adult universal sized life jacket (PFD) that fits paddlers 90lbs and up. If you would like us to swap an adult vest for a kid's we will do that at no charge. If you need an additional kid's vest we can typically add an extra vest at no charge but it's a good idea to book this in advance because in the busy months when we are running low on equipment we typically only provide 1 vest per paddler (double kayak gets 2 vests while a single kayak receives a single vest). Please book in advance if you require extra vest(s).
Q: Do your kayaks come with backrest or dry bags for our phones or personal items?
A: Our Kayaks do come with backrest that include a butt cushion for longer paddles. We do not provide dry bags with our rentals but we do usually have dry bags for sale in the shop.
Q: What if I forget to lock my bike and it gets stolen or my equipment blows off the dock and can't be located.
A: Every year we have customers that forget to lock their bikes or leave equipment on the dock during a thunderstorm and the paddle or PFD blows off. Most of the time bikes are found and we are contacted through our phone number on each bike. However, if equipment is not recovered you are responsible for the PFD, paddle, or bicycle. If you are concerned about this and the cost of equipment we will be happy to provide a price on items rented and if equipment is lost or stolen I can provide invoices to verify prices paid for equipment. We charge our replacement cost of items lost, stolen, or destroyed and will refund full amount paid if items are later found and returned in usable condition. This most often comes into play with PFD's that are lost and paddles that are broken due to misuse.
Q : What is your online Cancellation Policy?
A: Scooter's Surf Garage / Surf Unlimited Rentals allows cancellations on rental bookings up to 7 days prior to rental date. If an order is cancelled in full or partially, at least 7 days out, you will receive 90% of your payment back on your card within 7 business days. We retain 13% to cover sales tax that was paid (6.75%), card processing charges (currently 3.09% at time of charge and an additional 3.09% at time of refund). If cancellation is within 7 days of rental date (delivery date) no refund will be issued. If the island is closed for any reason (hurricane) you will receive 100% of your payment back and we absorb all processing and taxes paid.
